I’m an 80s baby who grew up on 90s movies, and Clueless was always in the rotation. So when my husband suggested a Cher and Dionne costume for me and our daughter, I didn’t argue. In fact, it felt like something we were always going to do eventually.

I also grabbed a long blonde wig since my hair isn’t Cher’s shade. The wig is optional if your own hair is already the perfect blonde.
What You Need for the Dionne Costume
Dionne’s outfit is a black and white tweed jacket and skirt over a red V-neck sweater vest. Then the wide brim hat ties the whole look together. It’s the piece people ask me about most, so I cover it separately below. They do sell the costume for young girls, but I wasn’t able to find it in toddler sizes (2T is what we needed) so here’s what I pieced together.
For the outfit itself:
- black and white tweed jacket and skirt set, kids sizing
- red V-neck sweater vest with a white top underneath
- Black leggings and black boots, whatever’s already in the closet
Almost everything here doubles as a real outfit later, which is the best kind of costume purchase. Most of the hat supplies came from craft stores, and I’ve linked what I can below.
How to Make the Dionne Hat From Scratch
The hat is the one piece you likely won’t find pre-made (unless you’re looking for an adult size). So I built mine from a plain white straw hat. Next, here’s exactly how, cardboard, foam, and glue gun included.
- Start with a plain white woven straw hat. Look for a white straw sun hat with a low rounded crown in your child’s size. Mine had a curled brim, which is the part we’re about to fix.
- Cut a small slit in the brim. This lets the brim lie flat. Cut it at the back so it looks like a seam from the front.
- Add cardboard under the brim. I glued cardboard underneath with a hot glue gun to hold the brim flat and give it structure.
- Build the lower brim with foam. I cut white foam sheets to make a wider lower brim. The foam also gives the ribbon something sturdy to grip.
- Glue on the ribbon. I glued 1.5 inch black ribbon around the edge of the foam brim and the base of the crown. Then I added a bow.
- Attach the rose. I glued a large red faux rose over the bow. Mine came from Hobby Lobby, but Michael’s or JOANN will have something similar.
That’s the whole hat. It needs no sewing and no pattern. Just a straw hat, cardboard, foam, ribbon, a rose, and a glue gun.

Here are a few things I learned the first time around.
First, buy the base pieces early, especially anything plaid or tweed. Those sell out fast once Halloween searches pick up. Also, size the kid pieces a little roomy. You’ll likely want to layer a warm shirt underneath, depending on your weather.
