If you’re here, you must be like me . . . you have a huge sweet tooth, and also love the salty treats. These Salted Caramel Pretzel Cookies, are just for you. With these cookies, you get the best of both worlds, sweet chocolate and caramel paired with the crunch of salty pretzels.
Chocolate chip cookies are iconic. I mean, who doesn’t love them?! But, did you know that they were created by accident? According to Nestle® Toll House® Ruth Wakefield was experimenting with a recipe. She chopped up a bar of semi-sweet chocolate to add to her cookies thinking the bits would melt when baked. Instead, they only softened slightly and retained their shape leading to the gooey chocolate chip cookies we know and love today. (Check out the story here.)
Tips & Tricks
Here are a few tips and tricks when making these cookies:
- Be sure not to over-mix your butter and sugar in the first step. You’ll know you’ve over-mixed if the butter starts to separate from the mixture. Be sure to stop once you have a light and fluffy consistency.
- The caramel bits can be hard to find. I personally love the Caramel Bits by Kraft. I’ve found them at Target or here on Amazon.
- Do not just grease a baking sheet. Use either silicone baking mats or parchment paper. The caramel bits in the recipe will melt and stick to a bare pan. These are my favorite. They help you evenly space your cookies and avoid the one giant cookie dilemma.
- I’ve made this recipe with all kinds of chocolate. My personal favorite is white chocolate chips, but feel free to mix it up! Use milk chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips, Reese’s, or even M&Ms.
